May is big month for free music, events in downtown Concord


Todos Santos Plaza in downtown Concord will be filled with music and events during the month of May.

On Tuesday, May 4, the Music at Noon program launches with a salute to Cinco de Mayo, featuring Alegres de Coaicoman. The music starts at noon and finishes at 1:30 p.m. The year-round Farmers' Market is in the plaza from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Subsequent Tuesday programs in May include Swing Fever (May 11), female a cappella group AkaBella (May 18), and Ancestral Water (May 25). Music at Noon continues through June 29.

Thursday evening, May 6, is opening night for the Thursday Music and Market series. Cajun and zydeco music from Tom Rigney & Flambeau is on the bill from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and the Farmers' Market is in the plaza from 4 to 8 p.m. At 6 p.m., several NASCAR entries from event sponsor Infineon Raceway at Sears Point will take a lap around the plaza and will be on display during the event.  

May musical guests include reggae band Native Elements (May 13), the Concord High Jazz Ensemble (May 20), and Bill Martini's '70s Tribute (May 27). The Thursday Music and Market series continues through Sept. 16.

MomDay returns to the plaza on Sunday, May 9 at 2 p.m. featuring the Elvis tribute band James Clark and the Jailhouse Rockers, and a performance by D'Ann's Academy of Dance. The winners of the 2010 Mother's Day essay contest will be announced, and one special Mom in the audience will receive a surprise make-over.

Todos Santos Plaza is located in downtown Concord on Willow Pass Road between Mt. Diablo and Grant streets. Free parking is available in two municipal garages. The Grant Street Garage entrance is on Salvio Street between Grant and Colfax streets. The Todos Santos Parking Center entrance is on Salvio Street between Galindo and Mt. Diablo streets.

All May events will be televised live on Concord cable TV channel 28 (Comcast), 29 (Astound) and on AT&T U-verse channel 99. The performances can also be viewed from the City's website at www.cityofconcord.org by selecting "Watch Concord Cable TV" from the "Video & TV" box.
