Concord Community Pool to closure briefly for upgrades

The City of Concord plans to upgrade the mechanical systems at Concord Community Pool over the next few months to increase energy efficiency. This will require closure of the pool from Dec. 15, 2011 through Jan. 7, 2012. While the pool is not open for recreational swimming or classes in the winter, the closure impacts lap swimmers and members of the Terrapin Swim Team.

The project includes the installation of new high-efficiency heaters and retrofitting the pool’s circulation pump with a variable frequency drive, allowing for variable speed operation. During times when the pool is in use, the pump will operate at required flow rates; when the pool is closed, the pump will operate at 80 percent, saving energy. The retrofit includes a redundant pump and motor that will allow for maintenance to be done on an annual basis without having to shut down the pool.

“In the long run, these two projects will mean higher energy efficiency and less potential for pool closures,” says Recreation Program Manager Christopher Roke. “Both are huge benefits to the City as well as our user groups.”

Concord Community Park is also about to get a solar photovoltaic system installed near the pool. Solar panels will be incorporated into two new shade structures, one in the tennis court parking lot and the second in the area near the public restroom. Energy from the solar panels will eventually be used to power the pool circulation pump. The project, part of a multi-year effort by the City to reduce energy expenses, will result in $43,000 in annual energy savings.
