Tribute to City Councilmember Michael Chavez
(1945 - 2007)
We are saddened by the sudden passing of City Councilmember Michael Chavez on Saturday, August 4. A memorial mass and reception were held August 14.
Friends of the family have set up a trust fund to benefit his son, Austin, and his daughter, Dallas. Contributions may be made to the Chavez Memorial Trust Fund, Mechanics Bank, 1170 Concord Ave., Suite 160, Concord CA 94520.
There has been a great outpouring of sympathy for Michael’s family. Our hearts go out to them and our thoughts and prayers are with them. Expressions of sympathy may now be directed to the newly created trust fund, established in his memory,†said Peterson.
Councilmember Chavez, a 27-year Concord resident and business owner, was elected to the City Council in November 2006. His wife, Vikki, will continue to operate Charisma Salon on Clayton Road in Concord, the business they co-founded in 1979.
Councilmember Chavez chaired the Concord City Council Housing & Economic Development Committee and served on the Neighborhood & Community Services Committee. He represented the City on the Mt. Diablo School District Safe and Drug Free Schools Task Force, the Central County Literacy Coalition, and was the alternate to TRANSPAC (the regional transportation planning committee for central Contra Costa County). He also served on the first Board of Councilors of the Concord campus of California State University, East Bay.
Before being elected to the City Council, Councilmember Chavez served on the Concord Planning Commission and chaired the Concord Parks & Recreation Commission (now the Concord Parks, Recreation & Open Space Commission).
