Pollution Prevention Week


Pollution Prevention Week 2005 poster National Pollution Prevention Week is celebrated nationally the third full week of September, from Monday to the following Sunday. It is a time when businesses, government, environmental groups, and citizens join forces for a common cause. By sharing information about pollution prevention, businesses become more competitive, businesses and government realizes cost savings, and environmental quality is enhanced.

Pollution Prevention Week originated in California in 1992. In 1995 it became a national event. Since 1995, based in Washington, D.C. has advanced pollution prevention awareness through National Pollution Prevention Week. The National Pollution Prevention Roundtable is a national forum that promotes the development, implementation, and evaluation of efforts to avoid, eliminate, or reduce waste generated to air, land, and water. The sustainable and efficient use of energy, materials and resources is vital to the protection and enhancement of human health and the environment, and the conservation of natural resources.

In 2000, President Clinton signed a letter of support for National Pollution Prevention Week and the Governors in sixteen states as well as scores of local officials issued official proclamations declaring support for this effort. Several members of Congress also gave strong statements of support on the House and Senate Floors. The Concord City Council will proclaim Pollution Prevention Week in Concord at their regularly scheduled meeting on September 12th.
