Investigations & Administrative Services

Major Crimes Unit (MCU) & Special Victims Unit (SVU)

The Major Crimes Unit and the Special Victims Unit are units within the Investigations Division. A Lieutenant, who is responsible to the Investigations Captain, commands both work groups. The Major Crimes Unit and Special Victims Unit are an acknowledged group of full-time detectives dedicated to the review and disposition through prosecution, of those responsible for the City's most serious public offenses.  The primary goal of these investigative work groups is to clear cases in a timely and efficient manner. The end result may be an arrest or case filing with the District Attorney's Office, or the case may be suspended or closed when leads are exhausted or victims refuse to cooperate. This being the tangible goal, the corporate and more qualitative goal is to provide excellent customer service to the citizens with whom we come in contact and serve on a day-to-day basis.

Major Crimes Unit

The Major Crimes Unit is supervised by a sergeant, and staffed with seven detectives. An administrative clerk provides clerical support. These crimes include homicide, robbery, felony and misdemeanor assault, weapons violations, and missing persons cases.  All gang related incidents are also investigated by this work group.  In addition to this work, these detectives also make assessments into natural and / or suspicious death cases working closely with the coroner's office and are also the lead detectives during in-custody death cases and officer involved fatal incidents.

Special Victims Unit

The Special Victims Unit is supervised by a sergeant, and staffed with six detectives, five School Resource Officers (SRO). The unit handles crimes against children, adult and juvenile sexual assault cases, domestic violence, elder abuse, and intervention and prevention programs. The focus of this work group is all aspects of family violence regardless of the age of the victim or offender. Each investigator also manages a group of registered sexual assault offenders to ensure that they are in compliance with the law and are correctly listed in the Megan's Law web site. The investigators are also responsible for tracking computer Internet predators with intervention and sting operations. The School Resource Officers are responsible for the investigation of cases that have to do with crimes committed in the schools as well as coordinating with the schools in crime prevention and attendance issues.

In conjunction with the above listed duties, the following tasks are performed by the Investigations Division detectives: interrogating offenders; interviewing victims and witnesses; examining crime scenes; securing criminal complaints and warrants of arrest; testifying and presenting evidence in court, and lending assistance to the prosecuting attorney in the courtroom presentation of criminal cases.
