The Concord Police Department Cadet program is designed to provide a service for the City of Concord, the Police Department and the Community that we serve. A Police Cadet is considered a future leader in the community. The goals of the Cadet program are to expose young men and women to the various aspects of police work in order to prepare them for a career in law enforcement. The Cadet program helps to provide quality candidates for all law enforcement related positions including, but not limited to: Police Officer, Reserve Officer, and Police Intern, Community Service Officer, Police Dispatcher, Crime Scene Investigator and Records Clerk.
A structured program has been established to promote Cadet responsibility. The Cadet expectations are high morals, excelling academically, using good judgment, and being active in the community. Police Cadets provide assistance to the Concord Police Department in many different ways and they act as a liaison between the police and youth in our community.
ELIGIBILITY & RECRUITMENT
A Cadet candidate must:
- Be between the ages of 15 and 21 years old (or a freshman in High School and 14 yrs old).
- Height and weight proportionate.
- Physical: No obvious deformities or limitations of joint movement.
- Show an ACTIVE interest in law enforcement.
- Have a 2.5 grade point average or higher.
- Maintain ethical standards of conduct at all times.
- Be able to pass an oral interview and background investigation.
- Candidates must not have been convicted of a felony or crime of moral turpitude.
- Once accepted, Cadets may remain in the program until their 22nd birthday.
The position of Police Cadet is a continuous open application process. Applications must be filled out, signed and returned to the Community Service Desk at the Police Department. A screening process which involves a preliminary background check is conducted on all candidates. Those qualified will go before an oral interview board. Candidates should dress to impress for this interview. Candidates wearing t-shirts, shorts, tank-tops, etc. will be turned away. Those that pass the oral interview will move on to the final background check process (which will involve a Live Scan FBI/DOJ fingerprint check).
Requirements for Membership
- After passing the background check, all new members will be placed on a probationary status for six months. During this time the Cadet will be monitored by the Police Cadet Advisors and Cadet Lieutenant/Sergeant(s). At the end of the probationary period a decision will be made to whether the new Cadet is suited for the program or not.
- There will be a uniform inspection periodically. Cadets WILL be prepared to wear uniforms to any function, unless told otherwise by an Advisor.
- All members will be expected to attend 75% of the Cadet meetings/trainings each year to remain in good standing. Trainings are currently held on the first Monday of each month.
